Get In The Killzone

Killzone has always been Sony’s own little first person shooter prodigy. With the PS2 sporting the first Killzone and then the sequel making its way to the PS3 in 2009, the franchise has become immensely popular and had even managed to rival the likes of Call of Duty. February 2011 saw the release of Killzone 3 which sold like hotcakes everywhere, but did it really live up to its reputation? Let’s find out;

Killzone 3 takes off immediately where Killzone 2 left you which was just after Visari was executed by Rico. The last of the Helghan ships arrive to fight off the invading Interplanetary Strategic Alliance and once again you will play as Sergeant Sevchenko and kick more butt than any one man could really handle. The story is incredibly moving and focuses mainly on the remaining leaders of Helghast struggling with each other to determine who will lead their people and fend off the invading ISA forces. Unlike other games in the series which are set in the heart of Pyrrhus City, you’ll fight your way through hellish environments, such as a jungle and a giant arctic wasteland. Overall you will see your characters develop over a six month period of time and you’ll no doubt relish in a story that’s a lot more heartfelt than what was given to us in other titles.

Get Into It:

From stealthy jungle warfare to wreaking havoc in an awesome mech suit, there are plenty of fun features in the game to make playing through it that bit more enjoyable. Of course it’s a first person shooter and so the mechanics are pretty much like any other FPS of today, but do games like Call of Duty really allow you to take control of rail guns and shoot down enemy robots? Unfortunately I wasn’t quite taken away by the way the screen fades to black between scenes and I felt like it was breaking me out of the experience a little at times. With that being said, the constant flow of different situations requiring you to adapt to different methods of combat really prevents the game from becoming too stale or repetitive.

Bloodthirsty melee attacks also improve the immersion into the game. Instead of simply bashing an enemy with your gun, your character will often stab a combat knife into an enemy’s eye, or something equally as gruesome. Sure, it may seem a little gimmicky at times but it definitely livens the game up.

Aside from the absolutely incredible campaign that’s jam packed with blood, gore and action, there is also a multiplayer with three fantastic modes to sink your teeth into. You’ve got your standard team death match which allows up to a whopping 16 players in 1 map, you’ve got a returning Warzone mode which is objective based, and you’ve got the brand new Operations mode which sees two opposing sides take on the roles of ISA and Helghast. Killzone 3 also allows you to go through the game co-operatively offline which is definitely a feature Killzone 2 should have had!
I should point out that you can also go through Killzone 3 using Playstation Move. However, I found that although you are given a more satisfying aiming experience, melee attacks are far more restrictive and more often than not you will end up screaming at your television set.

Gorgeous Graphics:

The gorgeous visuals of Killzone 3 are without a shadow of a doubt one of the best on the PS3. From realistic character models to war-torn environments with brilliant texturing, all of which is brought to life with chaotic explosions, you’ll easily find yourself immersed in the games setting. If you’re one of the lucky few who own a 3D television, then you’ll be glad to hear that Killzone 3 has joined the league of three dimensional games and will allow all kinds of explosive visuals to pop out at you. Nothing could make this type of game more awesome than having it all jump out at you!

Not even the awesome voice of Malcolm McDowell can save the acting in this game! Most of the in-game soldiers are given a poorly acted East London accent and the slightly lagging lip syncing can be quite off putting. The music on the other hand is powerful, fitting and absolutely beautiful.

Running Slow:

I can forgive the poor voice acting and lip syncing, but one thing that is really off putting is the fact that the game can often slow down whilst under heavy fire. It’s not really a major issue and it definitely doesn’t take away any love for the game, but it can be a nightmare when you’re facing bosses that resemble something you’d expect Solid Snake to fight.

The DL:

If you’re going to buy Killzone 3 expecting Call of Duty gameplay, then I’m afraid you’re going to be very frustrated. Killzone is not for the weak and is by far one of the most explosive games on the PS3. It has absolutely gorgeous graphics, a multiplayer that can’t be rivaled and gameplay that fuels you with adrenaline. Sure, it has a few cracks in the picture, but overall it’s a masterpiece.

A Lighthearted Bullet Storm

If you’ve got an undying taste for destruction and you’re in search of a first person shooter unlike no other, then you really don’t need to look any further than Bulletstorm! The name itself suggests a video game filled with complete carnage – and believe me, that’s exactly what you get.

The Plot:

Bulletstorm is set way into the future where you start off by playing as Grayson, a secret black ops soldier doing the dirty work for General Saranno. Unbeknown to Grayson is that he isn’t killing tyrants and murderers, he’s actually butchering the innocents who oppose Serano. Upon discovering this, Grayson and his team go AWOL and ten years later attack the very ship Serano is on. Of course the full-scale attack doesn’t quite go to plan and Grayson becomes stranded on the planet Stygia. To make matters worse, Stygia has been overrun by murderous convicts who want nothing better than to kill everyone in sight. Sure, the story is a little far-fetched, but to be honest you don’t play this game for its story, you play it for both its comedic value and awesome gameplay!

In Action:

Forget hiding in cover for fear of dying, Bulletstorm offers you the chance to attack head on in an insane amount of ways. From slinging enemies into mid-air before decapitating them, to launching fireworks into their bottoms whilst taking out nearby foes with a 4-barrel shotgun, there is enough inventive ways to kill that you never really get bored of this game. Each skill shot will reward you with XP, which you can then use to buy upgrades and new weapons which ultimately provide you with even more fun ways to kill enemies. There are a few fun-filled on-rails moments that will leave you gasping for breath but the game predominantly involves you running around and blowing things up.

The Cool Factor:

The games multiplayer mode is called Anarchy and has you facing hoardes of enemies with up to three other gamers. The vast selection of weapons combined with the ability to achieve team skill shots definitely gives anarchy mode a dash of excitement. However it’s not uncommon for anarchy mode to experience a number of glitches and lag, which ultimately can ruin the gaming experience.
Echo Mode on the other hand, is a much more entertaining experience and sees you replaying small portions of the campaign mode for points which you can then upload to the online leaderboards. This is a fantastic way to show people what a pro you are and is a sure way to grow your addiction for Bulletstorm.

Quality:

The visuals and art design are absolutely remarkable and it definitely makes a change to play a shooter that utilizes the Unreal Engine, but doesn’t stick to the grays and browns. There are a few glitch-fests in the game, but for the most part the graphics are crisp, clear and nice to look at.

Bulletstorm is full to the brim with the most bizarre and sometimes disgusting profanities you’ll ever hear in a video game. Admittedly the humor has its fairly good moments but a lot of the time it just runs dry and seems a little senseless. The voice acting is brilliantly played out and the music is absolutely awesome and definitely pumps you up for the fight of a lifetime!

Downs:

Aside from the few texture popping moments, the games only fault is its ridiculous humor that it constantly churns out at every turn. Sure, the game isn’t supposed to be taken seriously, but if Bulletstorm was less crude and a little more witty, then it could’ve gone a whole lot further.

The Final Opinion:

Bulletstorm is a brilliant game if you’re looking for lighthearted entertainment. There are plenty of gruesome ways to kill your enemies and easily caters to the dark and sadistic video gamer in you. Unfortunately the mediocre online play in conjunction with the adolescent vulgarity prevents Bulletstorm from joining the ranks of the more superior FPS games, but that doesn’t stop it from being an incredibly enjoyable game.

Battlefield 3 – An Honest Review

The First Person Shooter war is finally upon us as Battlefield 3 obtains a release date moments before Modern Warfare 3. It’s set to be a heated battle between these two FPS giants and allegiances have already been made. Battlefield 3 was of course one of the most hyped games of 2011 and had some pretty big expectations to live up to.

Story
Remember the setting of Black Ops? Mason was being interrogated by a mystery voice and you would jump back to previous events through some sort of flashback? Well, Battlefield 3 utilizes a very similar story telling technique. You mainly take control of the games protagonist known as Sergeant Blackburn, who is being interrogated by the CIA for information regarding his time spent fighting the PLR and the threat to New York that he uncovered. You’ll hop through flashbacks and allow the story to develop the same way we saw Black Ops develop. Sure, it’s not original and the cliché Russian’s combined with a nuclear threat has all been done before, but that definitely doesn’t stop you from becoming engrossed in the plot.

Gameplay
Unfortunately Battlefield 3’s campaign mode has received a lot of unnecessary bad reviews recently and I’m beginning to wonder why? From the moment the game begins you’re thrown into various exhilarating and interactive sequences that easily help immerse you into the game’s story. Words really can’t describe the tingling feeling you’re given as you skydive out of a moving a plane and the Battlefield 3 theme booms in the background. The game is full of heart pounding moments such as this and other ones which force you to plough through the game mercilessly in order to engross yourself in more interactive cutscenes.
The mechanics are pretty much basic in terms of what you’d expect from a first person shooter and there are no real surprise elements to confuse or annoy you. Battlefield 3 also manages to prevent the game from becoming laborious by throwing you into the occasional tank battle, thrusting you into mid air combat from the comfort of an American fighter jet, and an extremely fun sniping mission.
Overall the campaign gameplay is absolutely fantastic and definitely deserves a better reception than what some have given it.

Features
Campaign mode is as typical as it gets and has three difficulties to play through. Hard mode is of course, no walk in the park and can be quite unforgiving at times – especially towards the end when close quarter combat can lead to some extremely cheap deaths. There is also the option to go through certain missions co-operatively which is extremely fun, especially when you and a friend can take control of a chopper in Fire From the Sky.

Multiplayer is of course the main reason why everybody went out and bought this game. You can level up to 100 and along the way unlock some awesome stuff such as vehicle upgrades. Multiplayer will allow you to choose one of four classes which either let you specialize in heal, repair, resupply or protect other team members. There are so many different gameplay opportunities to keep you playing for hours on end, including the use of jets and tanks, that multiplayer alone is reason enough to purchase this game. Rush mode in particular is especially exhilarating as it requires your team to gain control of several different areas in one giant map. It’s fast, it’s dangerous, but believe me it’s fun! Conquest mode is just as fun and requires you to plant a bomb in enemy territory and then defend it with your team until it explodes. All in all, Battlefield 3 has to have one of the best online multiplayer’s on the PS3 to date.

Graphics
The Frostbite 2 engine really took the game to the next level and beyond! Cinematic camera effects, absolutely brilliant textures and life-like characters really beef the game up to satisfy all of our expectations. Sure it has the odd glitch here and there, the occasional dumb AI moments, and unforgiving collsion detection, but that doesn’t take away the beauty of this game. There was even times where I simply marveled at the scenery around me – of course this was after I took down potential enemy threats.

Sound
DICE did an outstanding job when it came to sound. Not only is the voice acting superb and pretty much flawless in every way, but the music is outstanding. Not your typical Harry Gregson Williams-esque soundtrack, Battlefield 3 captures you with brilliant Industrial music which sounds like Trent Reznor meets The Terminator. Nothing pumps you up more than an in-game cutscene with Solomon’s Theme lingering in the background – you’ll see what I mean.

Downsides
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to break cover because collision detection wouldn’t allow me to shoot a soldier from where I was. There have also been several instances where conversation repeated itself after an initial cutscene took place. Aside from these small issues, Battlefield 3 is a top notch game that Modern Warfare 3 is going to have a hard time taking on.

Overall
Battlefield 3 is one mean FPS that deserves a lot more credit than it has been given recently. So many people just copy ps3 games because they don’t want to pay, though this is one you should buy in it’s original form. Sure, it has the occasional hiccup and the story is nothing we haven’t seen before, but that doesn’t take away the sheer brilliance that the game has to offer. Outstanding soundtrack, breath-taking visuals, awesome gameplay and a multiplayer to be reckoned with, Battlefield 3 is the best First Person Shooter since Modern Warfare 2.

Top PS3 Care Tips – Make It Last

A 3.2 GHz CPU, oodles of memory capacity, backwards compatible and sporting a built in Blu-Ray player, yes I could only be talking about the worlds most powerful video games console to date, the PS3! Such a beastly console comes with a hefty price tag and you’ll no doubt want to take good care of it. Well, by following these few handy tips you’ll be well on your way to ensuring longevity and years of gaming ahead;

Don’t waste your money on an inter-cooler:

Not only will these suckers void your warranty and potentially damage your PS3’s cooling system, but they’re also completely useless! The PS3 is renowned for being the champ in the over-heating department with only a 1% failure rate – take that Xbox 360 with your 33% failure rate!

Fight away the dust:

Unfortunately, I and many others like me have learned the hard way that dust will void your warranty. Dust is always going to be a problem for as long as electrical equipment exists and it’s your job to keep on top of it. Give your PS3 a wipe down every couple of days and make sure it is kept off your troublesome carpet.

Updates:

Every now and then the Playstation Network will kindly send you an update for you to install onto your PS3’s hard drive. What you need to remember is to take the game out before any updates are installed. There have been a few occasions where unsuspecting gamers have left discs in their PS3’s drive, only for them to break and become unreadable. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Take care of your games:

I shouldn’t need to tell you that leaving a $60 game lying around outside of its case is only going to end in tears. Be safe, keep on top of putting them in their correct cases after use. You may also want to keep a close eye on who you lend your games to. I know it’s hard to say no, but sometimes it’s just necessary.

Prevent wear and tear:

Look at your PS3! It’s nice, it’s shiny and it’s probably the most attractive console you’ve ever seen right? Well unfortunately the PS3 is easily susceptible to surface scratches, especially if you wipe it down with the wrong cloth. Make sure you wipe it down with a good old micro fiber cloth instead of your average kitchen cloth.

Turn your console off the right way:

Constantly turning your PS3 off at the rear switch is a sure way to hardware failures. Instead, get into a routine of leaving it on standby. Of course if you plan on going away for a while and leaving your little old PS3 all alone, then by all means use the power switch.

Never EVER poke anything through the disc drive:

Sure, it can be tempting to shove some sort of cleansing item through the drive to try and clean that nasty dust, but 9 times out of 10 you’ll end up doing more harm than good. The last thing you want is to break your PS3 by actually trying to help it!

So there you have it! A few simple tips to keep your PS3 in tip top condition. Sure, some may seem obvious, but it can be really easy to get lazy and allow your console to fall into the hands of the dust bunnies!
